Pitches wanted (racing) | 50 cents to $1.50 per word

Joseph Bien-Kahn, Editor at Esses Magazine, is looking for pitches:
A quick thread for freelancers: I'm assigning features for Issue 03 of Esses Magazine and I've tried my best to avoid the "write what you know" trap when finding writers.
An expertise/personal connection can be helpful, but it can also be a crutch or even a hurdle in magazine writing.
In essay writing, yes, I want you to be as close as possible to the issue. But in a profile or a feature, your proximity only is interesting in the way it serves the reader and the narrative.
Your job is to bring a curiosity that allows you to guide the reader through a story.
As a writer, you're a filter, and as such, being too close to a topic can end up magnifying a subject to the point where you miss the forest for the trees.
We're not that interested in what's beneath the hood at Esses Magazine, but we're fascinated with the life of the person who designed it.
As Kaleb Horton writes in Esses Magazine Issue 02: "I'm unexpectedly starstruck. Not because of the man’s accolades but because he was pals with [REDACTED] for decades. He knows the secrets so well he wouldn’t know they are secrets."
Kaleb doesn't know anything about F1. But he knows people.
Anyways, pitch me at joseph@essesmag.com and subscribe at the link to make sure to get a copy of Issue 01 and Issue 02 (which drops later April) before they sell out.
Rates are usually between $.50 and $1.50 per word.
