We’re doing a food issue!
In this issue of The Grind, we want to celebrate (and eat!) all the amazing food in the GTA. We’ll share the best spots and the stories of the people cooking there. And we’ll look at the changing food system, from farms and distribution schemes to food justice projects.
We’re also interested in the hidden side of the food industry: exploitation, wage theft, harassment, dangerous conditions and harm to the environment.
We’re looking for pitches about all sides of the food equation. This could include (but isn’t limited to):
Hidden gems in the GTA
“Best of (insert type of food here)” lists
Food trends
Profiles of cooks, farmers and orgs making a splash
Local agriculture, foraging, and farm-to-table projects
Local breweries, wineries and distilleries
Stories about food service unions and unionization efforts
Looking inside the places most people never see (e.g. giant food distribution warehouses)
Food service work conditions and lifestyles (e.g. staying healthy, drugs, mental health, parties, etc.)
The food influencer world
The rules that control food in the GTA (e.g. restaurant zoning, food truck turf wars, health & safety policies, etc.)
WANT TO WRITE SOMETHING? SEND A PITCH.
Send a pitch of 200 words max describing what you propose to write and why you are the right person to do it. Include the proposed format (e.g. listicle, interview, reported article, etc.) and the word count.
At the short end, we are looking for listicles and profile articles starting around 250 words. At the long end we will consider feature articles of max 1,000 words.
The pay rate is $0.50 per word that appears in print.
Pitches are due on or before April 25, 2025. Sending earlier is better. The issue will be out for the start of summer.

Don’t want to write but have a story idea? Send a story tip.
This can be as simple as a few sentences telling us what’s up. Is your manager stealing tips from staff? Are you making less than minimum wage? Is your workplace dangerous? Is there a restaurant people need to know about? Depending on our capacity, we may follow up to see if we can publish something about it.
