John R. Platt, Editor at The Revelator, is looking for pitches:
Freelance journalists: The Revelator is finally open to pitches. We have a limited number of assignments available for the rest of this year, so check out our updated guidelines and pitch me!
GUIDELINES
The Revelator reopens to pitches on Sept. 3, 2025, and has openings for a limited number of freelance stories to run in November and December 2025.
We’re primarily looking for conservation stories set in the United States right now.
More specifically, we want the conservation stories that other publishers just don’t know how to handle — the stories you believe in, that get under your skin, that make your reporter’s radar scream, but you haven’t found a place to tell them yet.
Is the story you’re trying to pitch…
Weird, unusual, or quirky? Yes, please!
About snakes, spiders, rodents, or other species that don’t get much love? We care, and we can help make our readers care.
Speaking truth to power, or likely to cause an authoritarian to throw a fit? Let’s be bold together.
Bleak? We can handle the darkness.
About wonky politics or complex science? We can make them accessible.
Hopelessly optimistic, solutions-oriented, or inspiring? We like those, too!
We value stories with strong narratives and interesting characters, clear voices, a love of the wild, and a desire to reveal hidden truths.
Here are a few things we don’t need:
Pitches about our parent organization, the Center for Biological Diversity, or issues in which they have an active involvement
Breaking or super-timely news (we tend to contract out 4-6 weeks ahead)
Stories that have been heavily promoted by press releases or widely covered by other publications (we prefer stories that would otherwise slip through the cracks)
Stories tied to a specific date, celebration or event
Q&A-style profiles (we do those in-house)
Book, movie, or TV reviews
Personal essays
Content or SEO writing
AI “writing” (no ethical environmental journalist would use generative AI)
Our stories usually run 1,000-1,500 words and pay $300-$500. We distribute them under a Creative Commons license.
Please send your pitches to editor John R. Platt. Include a few sentences about why the story is important, why you think it’s a fit for The Revelator, a tentative list of the people you wish to interview, and an expectation of when you think you could complete the piece. If you haven’t written for us before, please provide links to some of your recent writing and let us know why you’re the best person to write this story. We’ll respond as quickly as possible.
