Pitches wanted (culture, politics, societal issues) | $700+ per piece
Added 2025-09-05 03:30:31 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: KYD MAGAZINE
Deadline: 16 September 2025
We are now accepting pitches for commentary, essays, memoir, reviews, profiles and interviews for publication in KYD magazine. We seek work between 1500 and 2000 words. We’ve raised minimum fees for non-fiction writers to $700.
You’re interested in pitching to us? Yes, please! We’re looking for new feature pieces that will spark new ideas and engage readers. Spaces are limited, so we want something special. Articles that feel urgent and insightful, cultural criticism that touches on the pulse points of what’s important, beautifully written essays. There’s space, as always, for humour, for creativity, and we’re always keen on pieces that engage with books, the craft of writing and the publishing industry.
To help you out, here’s some things we’d love to see: Pitches that have clear angles and that illuminate something new. We’re not as worried about it being newsworthy, but we like when pitches are tied to timely conversations or thought-provoking controversies. We love to read pieces that are forecasting and setting trends, or can surprise the reader. Most of all, we love engaging prose!
We’re less interested in seeing pitches that cover a topic rather than having a take or strong point of view, book reviews that don’t engage in larger trends and ideas, personal essays that have nothing to say about the broader world or dry, humourless writing that takes itself too seriously. We also aren’t interested in pitches that aren’t familiar with work that KYD has published before!
KYD members can access the free online course How to Pitch to help refine pitches to KYD and other literary magazines and improve chances of publication.
Pitches close 11.59pm (AEST), Tuesday 16 September 2025.
