We’re looking for blog pitches from young disabled perspectives for our new series, Doing Adulthood. It’s all about the messy, funny, powerful, and real moments of figuring out life and independence. You don’t need to be a professional writer. Just send us a short paragraph about what you want to write. We want stories about what it means to grow up, get independent, and figure out life as a young disabled person. You could write about moving out or housemates, your first job or study, dating, friendships, or identity, managing money, something else? Blogs will be approximately 800 words, writers will be paid $200, you'll receive support with writing and editing. Pitches close 20 July 2025.
CALL FOR BLOG PITCHES: ‘DOING ADULTHOOD’
We’re looking for blog pitches from young disabled perspectives for our new series, Doing Adulthood.
This series explores what it means to grow up, find independence, and navigate adult life as a young person with disability.
This is a chance to share your lessons, mistakes, and wins to support other young people with disability who are figuring things out too.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We’re looking for blogs that speak honestly about the realities of adulthood for young disabled people. Your story might be about:
Moving out of home or living with housemates for the first time
Starting your first job or enrolling in study
Learning how to manage money, Centrelink, transport or healthcare
Making friends, dating, or figuring out identity
Something that surprised you about becoming an adult
Anything else that shaped how you think about adulthood and disability
Your story might be funny, reflective, messy, empowering, or all of the above!
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Each blog will be approximately 800 words
Writers will be paid $200 upon completion and acceptance of their blog
Blogs will be published on our website and shared on social media
We will select and publish 15 blogs in total
We’re aiming to include a wide mix of topics and intersectional perspectives
You don’t need to be a professional writer to submit a pitch. We’ll support you through the writing and editing process.
WHO CAN PITCH?
This opportunity is open to:
People who are over the age of 18
People who live in Australia
People who identify as disabled or who are contributing a perspective on behalf of a young disabled person (for example, a parent or supporter)
We especially encourage pitches from people who are:
LGBTQIA+
First Nations
From culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds
From migrant or refugee backgrounds
Living in regional, rural, or remote communities
HOW TO PITCH
To submit your blog idea, just fill out the short form here.
You don’t need to submit a full blog, just a short paragraph about what you’d like to write and why it matters to you. A few sentences is plenty!
Pitches close: 11:59pm AEST, Sunday 20th of July, 2025
If your pitch is selected, we’ll get in touch to confirm next steps and support you to develop your blog.

Learn more about the publication: Children and Young People with Disability Australia (CYDA) is a national advocacy organization and publishing platform that produces news, policy submissions, essays, and commentary focused on the rights and experiences of children and young people with disabilities. It covers topics such as inclusive education, employment, health, and systemic reform through articles, reports, and first-person reflections by young disabled people, advocates, and professionals. The platform aims to drive systemic change and elevate the voices of young people with disabilities by connecting lived experience with public policy. More information here.
