Grist is always looking for investigative and narrative features that tell climate and environmental stories through the lenses of justice, culture, politics, health, business, and solutions. The publication seeks magazine-style reporting of 2,000 to 4,000 words that can sway opinion, shape policy, or hold wrongdoers accountable, as well as shorter news and analysis pieces of 800 to 2,000 words backed by original reporting. Successful pitches should explain what is new, why it matters now, and why the writer is the right person to tell the story, with strong voice, clear stakes, and a diversity of sources. Grist pays flat fees based on word count, with rates starting at $0.80 per word and adjusted for experience and expertise.
