How To Write a Sea Shanty or Pirate Theme (And a request!)

HEY FOLKS!

I'm not one to jump on bandwagons, but this type of video was something I had planned for a long time but never got around to making, and just this week I heard the call of the internet to make this.

I also made this to take a break from the Locrian video which was giving me more headaches than even my most difficult videos. I’ve also been very busy in my personal life- I put so many things on the back burner for those three months that I was working like mad on the course that I’m having to play catch up right now, while also properly managing the new aspects of my online business . Fortunately it seems like those behind-the-curtains elements are starting to run smoothly!

Which leads me to my next point- Starting tomorrow, I'm gonna take a break from things for a week, including the livestream on Monday. It will instead be held the following Monday the 29th at 2PM CST. I will be posting a video on YT while I’m away, a short clip from the course that I think a lot of people could benefit from. After that, the Locrian video WILL be finished no matter what, and posted before January ends!

Also- It’s looking like my Patreon inbox is working properly again and it’s quite full! I’m going to respond to everyone here by the end of the day, so if you don’t see a response from me by tomorrow, please try resending your question or comment. The problem before with the Patreon message box was that it was showing hundreds of old conversations as new ones,  while not displaying new messages, but it does in working order now. Fingers crossed…

On another front, the Signals Discord is up and running! I will make a post here that includes an invite to the server. If you’re new or unfamiliar with Discord, I recommend you wait a bit for us all to get the place clean and feeling like home before joining. I’ll also make a quick video here that shows what our Discord is all about, and how/why you can start using it for those who might be confused or curious.

However, if you’re experienced with Discord I could certainly use your help! I’d like to have at least 4 or 5 moderators that can assist with organizing discussions, contests, collaborations, etc. If you’re interested in helping, please send me a message here on Patreon first. I already know a few of you are eager to help, but anyone else who wants to assist and thinks they’re qualified should definitely let me know. The goal is to create a productive, inquisitive, and helpful community of musicians that specialize across many different genres and skill sets - a goal which I can't do alone!

Lastly, thank you for being here at the start of a new year. I still find it hard to properly express how grateful I am for all of yours’ support - all I can hope to do is make enough cool and helpful stuff that you are proud for helping me.

SEE YA!

As a game composer, I haven't dedicated my life to understanding folk music or sea shanties so its really great to see it broken down in a way that I can get the effect I'm looking for without having to be an expert.

Hi Jake, I play the melodeon (or diatonic button accordion) and have swam in the world of folk music and song for years. So, I really thought that either the accordion or concertina was going to show up when you talked about orchestration! But it didn't, I really thought this was going to be my instrument's moment, and it wasn't, haha! I thought all your advice was really good. Plus, it's always interesting to me to see folk music talked about & described in this way. Thanks!
