Making An Instrumental With RELATIVE Modal Changes

To complete the recent string of lessons on modes, I've written an entire instrumental song here that demonstrates the supreme yet simple power of using RELATIVE modes.

When we hear the word "modes" we often think of big scale runs and changing keys and stuff. But that's not always the case- the most valuable usage of the modes, in my opinion, is shifting relatively. This way you don't even have to change keys, but can still access the different modal worlds.

I've included 2 mp3s with this post. One is the track from the above video (with some slight improvements) and the other is meant for you to practice over, as it has all the guitar leads removed. I explain in the video how I think about playing lead over this track.

Hope you enjoy this! And please let me know if there any more remaining modal questions... I love talking about this stuff but I really am trying to make content that dispells ALL confusion about the topic.

This week we're doing a Live Q+A on Wednesday evening. I'll post a thread on Tuesday to collect questions, so if you have any non-modal questions please save them for then.

See you soon!

Making An Instrumental With RELATIVE Modal Changes

Comments

This was the video that tied it all together for me Jake. It totally makes sense to think of it all as the relative major as the tonal center then modal shift off of that. I really feel like I've leveled up today in a big way. Thank you for the time and effort you put into teaching us this stuff. I wish I could contribute more back, but perhaps armed with this knowledge I soon will.

thank you
