Diving into the Wreckage 6.2: The Continuing Debt Crisis w/ C. Derick Varn

Part two of Sean and Varn's extended discussion on sovereign debt !

This time we dive into the pre-history of of the present moment, how the New York City fiscal crisis of 1974-75 and subsequent banker's coup presaged a new 'post-industrial' and financialized regime of accumulation often called neoliberalism. And if debt crises are a signal of the rise of a new political-economic order, what sort of world does the current crisis presage?

trying to think of the episodes where we clarify these things a bit and i would say for critiques of keynesianism there is the one with ted reese and the one with jason smith. also good on the econ front is the episode we did with tony norfield. i guess a lot of what we talk about comes from a particular reading of marxian pol-econ based around the work of paul matticks jr and sr and robert brenner, so any of those authors would be valuable to check out if you want more. especially recommend 'Marx and Keynes' by mattick sr.

I love the flow of these episodes but I find myself only getting a very rough understanding of the conversation. Could you make a point to explain your terms a bit more, please? As a good example, you mention the "failures of Keynesianism" and then specifically explain what you mean by that really well. You briefly lay out the Keynesian argument - that inflation is a neutral phenomenon overall as it reduces the value of consumer debt - and then point out how that argument fails - by not accounting for the distribution of debt and varying (even "usurous") interest rates for consumers in differing financial situations. You wouldn't have to go into that level of detail every time but a little explainer, whenever a technical term appears for the first time in a recording, would be useful. Terms like "rentiers"/"rentier economy", "peonage", "structural adjustment", "quantitative easing" (always forget the specifics of that one), what counts as the "early modern period" etc. These ditw episodes deal with massive, structural issues that every communist should want to grapple with, I just need a bit of a leg up to properly engage with them.
