Flintstone Style People
Added 2024-01-09 19:19:31 +0000 UTCI drew a lot of (early) Hanna Barbera characters when I was a kid and it has certainly influenced my style. I drew many Flintstone comics and flip books and did dirty ones when I was a teenager. I called them 'Cave Nudes' and the football players loved them.
No nudes here though, just a bunch of characters inspired by Ed Benedict's HB designs. Ed designed all of HB's early characters - up till about 1965. I always liked his style because it was weird and stylized though not completely flat. His shapes were sort of geometric and angular but with rounded corners and no parallel lines. They were stylish but still organic. He had a 'modern' or futuristic design style which I loved - even when he drew cavemen.

Here are some of mine in progress.

Ed's first Barney design made him look like a drooling idiot and Mel Blanc used his retarded voice for him. - the same voice he used for Friar Tuck in a Chuck Jones Bugs Bunny cartoon called 'Rabbit Hood'.

They softened him later but I always thought they should have evolved him more in the idiot vein. I love doing variations of brain challenged Barney.

I'll post more color cavemen soon because it is my current obsession.

Great job! I also remember hearing about those high school drawings where your Flintstones characters had primitive tattoos
