That's a good point, and I remember that when Martha brought it up in "The Shakespeare Code" (concerned about her race in the Renaissance), the Doctor dismissed it and it wasn't an issue within the episode...and I'm guessing in reality it would have been an issue. It is kind of nice to imagine a world in which none of that matters, though. ;-)

Doctor Who has a tendency to value presenting diversity in situations to be a positive inclusive experience for the audience over being 100% representative of historical situations. As others have pointed out, racism exists in most cultures, the difference here is that is wasnt legally institutional, like segregation was in US law. While 20th century racism in the US clearly sat in the shadow of slavery, in the UK it was more a lingering product of imperial vs colonial superiority.

2019-06-11 13:29:31 +0000 UTCThis is one of those funny things you will have people who will write and tell you that there were differences in how Martha would have been treated in England vs the US. She would have been treated exactly the same (as less then a person). I am an American who was born and raised in Germany and people who are "different" are treated this way.........in any culture. The very fact that people feel the way that you do is what will help end it......the people who justify it by saying "other's would be worse" are part of why the issue is systemic. The thing that will hurt the most later is that of all the people there, Martha had the most education/knowledge and was the least listened to. History repeats itself always....hahahaha
