I think the situation shows both, really. (Eleanor's weaknesses and Vane's brutality.) When Vane had Max tied up naked, her face was bleeding and bruised so clearly she had been beaten at the very least. And I'm not forgetting the massive punch to Eleanor's jaw... this seems like a regular, default behavior for Vane. And the thing is, PIRATE! *lol* I've been thinking about the contrast between Billy and Vane (and all the characters along the spectrum), and it's such a fascinating exploration of what it is to be a pirate, at least in this context on this show. Is it like Captain Flint said, that these are simply (decent?) men without hope? Or are they the stereotypical pillaging, raping murderers that "pirates" are supposed to be? I'm guessing that it's a mixture of both. I'm really interested in finding out more about the characters' backgrounds, especially where this issue is concerned. I think you're right that Vane didn't have much to do with the actual rape (though his crew did seem to know all about his holding her captive - did he tell them?), and you're right about Eleanor indirectly rewarding his crew members...I didn't think about that! Really interesting stuff! Thanks so much for posting about that!

2019-06-17 04:47:42 +0000 UTCIn defence of Charles Vane (sort of), he actually had nothing to do with the rape of Max. Yes, he had tied her up naked, presumable for interrogation, but there's nothing to indicate anything more than that. He was actually sending her away (prompted by Jack), and it was his crew that took it upon themselves to intercept and abuse her. The irony is, Eleanor, in punishing Vane by removing his command, has actually rewarded his crew by potentially giving them a portion of the Spanish gold. The whole situation actually shows up Eleanor's weaknesses and emotional irrationality, rather than Vane's brutality, I think.
