Doctor Who has a history of doing mini specials in November as contribution to a charity raising telethon called Children In Need which started in 1980 and recently crossed £1Billion (thats a B). Sometimes its just a preview of the upcoming special, sometimes they film something like this. It was done on the cheap hence the lack of extra sets or fancy effects you might expect, and the actors would have almost certainly donated their time for free. To add context to the other comment about Davison being 'his' Doctor. One of the reasons fans are particularly warm to David is he was a massive fan of Doctor Who as a kid, and being 'one of us', seems to have a passion for doing a lot of things around the show itself, outside of the core acting, and made The Doctor a really positive experience. There is also another interesting connection between these two actors, but thats better gotten into another time.

2019-07-06 07:50:02 +0000 UTCFor old-time fans (like me), this love-letter to the classic series from Steven Moffat was just utterly charming and packed with in-references. (And I loved your delayed reaction to the "Master's beard" joke -- Paula from Fan Theory did exactly the same!) The ending is not just the Tenth Doctor reminiscing about the Fifth, it's also David Tennant enjoying himself acting opposite one of the classic Doctors he grew up watching. Peter Davison was the youngest Doctor ever until Matt Smith came along, and certainly in 2007 he was the only classic series Doctor who could be put back in his old costume and still look even close to how he did back in the 1980s. Regarding the celery: the producer at the time, John Nathan-Turner, had some... idiosyncratic, let's say, costuming ideas -- as well as the celery, did you notice the little question marks on Davison's collar? They were also JN-T's notion. Davison didn't particularly like the celery thing, but he agreed to go along with it on the condition that, sometime before he left the show, a reason for the Doctor wearing it would be provided. So in his final story, a jokey "explanation" was hastily inserted into the script; you can watch the clip here -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v4JpeXoJNI -- and get a quick glimpse of the Fifth Doctor in action.
