Doctor Who 4x03 "Planet of the Ood" full reaction

The Ood are back!

Comments

When we met Donna again in the first episode, I really loved how her adventure with the Doctor had not only stayed with her, but inspired her as well, so by the time we saw her again, she'd already had a lot of character growth. I thought that was really cool!

I was so happy to see the Ood again! (And then sad to see them so abused...but then happy again...) That's really cool that they incorporate those references from Classic Who into the new series - it's the Doctor's life, after all! Thanks for pointing those out; I love that kind of trivia. :-)

I was looking forward to your reaction to this one, knowing how you appreciated the Ood in series 2. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before, but the Ood are in faft based on the Sensorites, a telepathic race from a First Doctor story way back in Classic Who Season 1 in 1963. In faft the Doctor mentions that story when he and Donba were looking at the map of the Oodsphere and galactic distribution. So that's 2 references to Classic Who stories so far this series - The Romans last week and The Sensorites this week.

Another strong episode in a great series. You might've noticed that Donna's first two adventures have been quite dark and intense. I think it was really clever of them to do it this way because everybody expected the complete opposite with Donna as the companion; instead S4x02 and S4x03 indicate that this series will be the darkest yet. In fact, imo S4 remains the darkest series of Doctor Who to this day.... I also think this approach really serves to develop Donna's character. When we first met Donna back in "The Runaway Bride", she seemed very shallow and materialistic, she wasn't too concerned about the outside world. Donna was so excited about finding the Doctor again in "Partners in Crime". She probably thought travelling around the universe with the Doctor would be all sunshine and rainbows, but seeing the darker sides of the universe has changed her worldview and is making her realise there are more important things in life. For a moment, she even questions her decision to continue travelling with the Doctor and impulsively says she wants to go home. She soon realised that would be the cowards way out and she has to fight the injustices she comes across in the universe. Her empathy and compassion for the people of Pompeii and the Ood really highlight her best characteristics and show how much she has grown already as a person. It's also Donna that drives the Doctor to question the situation instead of ignoring it, already showing what a positive influence she is on the Doctor, great writing. I also love how this episode expanded on what "The Impossible Planet"/"The Satan Pit" only hinted at with the Ood. They're such a great idea because despite their monstrous appearance, they're quite a gentle and benevolent race. Judging by the way they look, you'd think they would be the ones committing terrible acts. However, it's actually the humans who are the oppressors by keeping them as slaves. Don't judge a book by it's cover, as they say. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), the darker themes will continue throughout this series, the worst is yet to come in fact. Be ready. The Ood telling the Doctor his song is ending soon really hits me hard in retrospect. Every Doctor has to leave eventually, but how and when will Tennant leave? You'll have to wait and see.
