Doctor Who 4x06 "The Doctor's Daughter" full reaction

"You talk all the time, but you don't say anything." ;-)

Returning to classic Who now can be a challenge for me even as someone who has a great fondness for it. Compared to modern Who, Classic can be slow. Glacially slow sometimes, and longer stories can have more padding than a mattress factory. I know most of us probably have a few select stories In mind for visiting the classics though!

He mentioned being rubbish at weddings, especially his own at the end of "Blink". I can't recall anything other than that.

Oh, thanks so much for telling me that! I knew I couldn't watch any myself to see how other people are handling that show format. That's a great idea. πŸ‘ 27 seasons...wow.

Oh yes, it was the dad thing in "Fear Her", thanks! I remember him mentioning something about his own marriage or wedding in some episode or other, but I can't remember which one. ;-) Either that, or I'm imagining things. Haha!

One of your reactor compatriots, Sesskasays, recently started reacting to ALL Classic Who, starting from 1963 Season 1, with the noble aim of getting through everything (bless her!). She's taken the approach of doing two 25 minute episodes in one sitting and treating them as the equivalent of one episode (with 10 minutes of footage from the combined 50 minutes). That seems to be working well for her, although there are challenges when coming across the missing episodes from the 1960s. It would be great if you could do some Classic Who, though I wouldn't expect you to try to do all stories from all 27 seasons (and the seasons ran for much longer in the early days). However, dipping into a few stories from each of the Doctors would give you a good grounding in their background and personalities, as well as some of the pivotal events, characters and creatures which may have a bearing on future plots.

I think you're misremembering. The Doctor briefly mentioned being a Dad in "Fear Her", but he never said anything about a marriage. I think Tennant and.... Tennant (lol) played it really well too. It's a shame that they couldn't make Jenny a full time companion. I think that would change the dynamic of the show too much though, so it was probably for the best. However, at least a few more episodes with Jenny would've been interesting.

Yes, David Tennant was great! And I remember the Doctor mentioning his marriage before (in "Fear Her", I believe) but I can't remember if he mentioned children before. I think it's such an interesting dynamic, and they played it really well - I'm just greedy, I wanted more of it. ;-)

I was wondering about that, looking at lists Classic Who episodes. That is going to be a challenge to edit reactions!

Even though I don't think this episode is amazing (it's pretty good, but the weakest in this series imo), I think David Tennant is just phenomenal in it. He has to convey all the pain and sorrow from the time war and losing all his family and show the conflict and understandable difficulty he has in accepting Jenny as his daughter because of that. It's his performance that makes Jenny credible as a character and by the end you really believe she's the Doctor's daughter, when he finally accepts her. Probably one of his top ten best performances as the Doctor. The truth behind the war between the Hath and the Humans is really clever as well. It's quite scary how people can mytholigise their whole history like that. I guess people try as best as they can to make sense of situations that don't make sense at all. I love that Donna is the one to work all this out as well, SUPER TEMP! πŸ˜‚ As for the ending, I like it. I can understand why some feel the emotion was undercut, but to the Doctor she's still dead. He doesn't know she came back to life, so nothing's changed there. I like the ending because of the parallel between the Doctor and Jenny. Throughout the episode we see her becoming more and more like the Doctor (she even teaches him a lesson about not all soldiers being bad. A prejudice the Doctor has built up in his head because of his PTSD from the time war) and at the end she ran away, just like the Doctor did from Gallifrey all those years ago. Now she can go fight monsters, save civilisations and go and do whatever she likes, just like her Dad. BTW, Russel T Davies, the current showrunner at the time fully intended to keep Jenny dead, but he was swayed and convinced by Steven Moffat to bring her back to life. You may know that Steven Moffat is the showruuner from series 5 to 10, so that should give you an indication of how he will approach the show during his era....

I quite agree with your assessment that the story was rushed at the end. That's one of the problems with trying to fit these stories into a 45 minute format. In Classic Who the episodes were mostly 25 minutes, but were all serialised into usually 4 to 6 episodes per story (which has its own problems, notably trying to manufacture a cliff-hanger every 25 minutes). Some writers, editors and directors are able to make better use of the 45 minutes than others, but I do enjoy it when they take the time to explore stories and characters in more depth over a two-parter.
