Questions about the Doctor Who specials

I’ve heard there are a handful of them, but I’m not sure if they are full-length episodes, or shorter mini-sodes. Are they in lieu of a Christmas special, or in addition to one? I’m figuring out my recording schedule for the next couple of weeks, and I’m hesitant to look ahead on Amazon because I just know they’ll show me more than I want to see! 😳
