The post-ep commentary can be found separately here. I wish I'd had more time to think back on the whole series before recording it, but it had to be done right away. Here are some clarifications to my ramblings: 🤣

I realize it was a different woman with post-tea/dead Abigail in ep. 9 because Clara hadn’t died yet. But that ghost looked very similar to Clara.

I was referring to the vision/ghost of Liv that Hugh was talking to throughout the series, and that she was a product of his subconscious, and not the real Liv ghost that is in the house.

I misremembered Liv “telling people their fortunes” as “reading tarot cards” (LOL) but you know, similar idea. Just an example of how she was and how she saw herself as someone who was ‘touched’ with the Sight, so to speak.

I wonder about that tactic of confronting your fears to conquer the ghosts, because Nell was encouraged to face her fears, but she ended up dying anyway. Eek! So maybe that tactic doesn’t always vanquish the ghosts! (But perhaps Nell dying was an inevitable event, because, well, you know...)
Further thoughts:
I love the contrast between Ghost Liv and Ghost Nell, in that Ghost Liv is trying to call everybody home to die (wake up!) and Ghost Liv was trying to help them and prevent that from happening. (Nell telling Luke to “go” not just in the red room in the last episode, but in his vision of her earlier in the series.) So I just liked that push-and-pull contrast between mother and daughter, and the different agendas that they had.
I wish I’d had the time to let this series really sit with me a while before recording commentary, because if I’d had more time, it would have been clearer and more comprehensive. I really did love the series and was very emotional about it, but I think right after I finished the finale I was still intellectually digesting it. Sorry for the footnotes! 🤣

Yes, absolutely, that tea party scene was horrifying, but makes everything else clear by the end of the episode. So tragic! Those poor kids! (All of them, really, but especially the kids at the "tea party") I agree with your theory about the ghosts. There seemed to be a number of them who were relatively benevolent. It's so sad that the angry/crazy/awful ones were so strong and able to cause so much damage. 😢

2020-07-05 08:16:29 +0000 UTCAbsolutely, you are right. I think that was in Clara's husband's conversation with Hugh, yes? They really kept me guessing about Abigail and her mother - so nice to see all the puzzle pieces fall into place.

2020-07-05 08:10:05 +0000 UTCI think the most heartbreaking part for me was realizing that Abigail was real and the Dudley's daughter. If you ever rewatch, you will see how much of Luke's trauma is based in that last night when he witnessed his mother kill Abigail and then had everyone tell him she was never real. And the "Bowler Hat" ghost haunting him is his mom's actions from that night, IMO, because Olivia was wearing that hat in the Red Room when she poisoned the tea. Anyhow, it's a beautiful series but so heart-breaking. I get Hugh's need to protect Olivia's memory but it resulted in these secrets and lies that damaged them throughout adulthood. My pet theory is that who a person was in life is the type of ghost they become. Poppy was insane and a terrible person in life and a pretty horrible ghost who drove Olivia mad, too. But other ghosts seem to harm no one, like the clock-maker.
