Because my commentary for this one is woefully inadequate, I'll just say - fantastic episode! πππ

I am surprised how far ahead you are, and just a teensy bit disappointed I wasn't here before πThis episode was immense, a real triumph and Capaldi was great, and then it only got better and better with the zygons and many many others. It still is one of my ALL TIME favourites

2020-07-11 00:23:54 +0000 UTCI think since now you're a couple of episodes in you're kind of getting a grasp of what the Doctor's like and how its a far departure from Eleven. He's definitely a lot more Classic Who than New Who, specifically early Classic Who of like One - Three. I remember during this early period there was a lot of people in the fandom who just found Twelve jarring they'd say stuff like "Well The Doctor wouldn't do that" or "The Doctor wouldn't say that" and they'd be corrected like "Well, no, a new who Doctor wouldn't say or do that but Classic Who Doctors have before." If you remember from Adventure in Space and Time, the way they describe The First Doctor to William Hartnell it's very similar to Capaldi's portrayal. He's gruff, he's stern, he's authorative and intimidating, but he's also wise, grandfatherly, and with a twinkle. I don't think its a coincidence that they do a storyline where The Doctor gets a new cycle of regenerations, startng at his first regeneration of a cycle again (The clock strikes Twelve) and that regeneration greatly resembles The First Doctor, almost like a modern version of him. I do think it was on purpose, especially since Capaldi has said many times in interviews he grew up on The First Doctor and that was his inspiration.

2020-07-10 21:06:10 +0000 UTCI am with you on the intro. It's my most torn intro every. I can't categorise it because it has my favorite graphics of any Doctor Who intro but then my least favorite music (its fine, not good but fine but then it just falls apart when it kicks in and gets all screechy) so I guess, best graphics, worst music, meets in the middle and its somewhere in the middle for me?

2020-07-10 20:45:50 +0000 UTCThis is such a good episode! To your comment: Humanity didn't die out in 100 years from Clara's/Danny's time. Orson was supposed to jump forward into the next week but instead something happened and he got sent to the end of the universe.

2020-07-10 20:39:46 +0000 UTCClara comforting the young Doctor followed by Clara staring at him in the Tardis with this wide-eyed look of tenderness and fondness, as if in that moment she can see right through all his "Doctorness" straight into the little boy that's still afraid of the dark. Melts my cold heart every time. I like to think that it is the moment Clara /really/ "sees" him, and not just "sees 11 in 12" but sees straight into the Doctor. And backtracking to her wide eyes, I love how this Doctor just literally cannot comprehend how large her eyes can become, like he's intimidated by them and all the emotions therein. Oh Doctor, lol. Anyway, I think this episode does wonderful things for both the Doctor and Clara's characters and for their uniquely 12/Clara dynamic. Clara is not just the impossible girl. She is a flawed person who sometimes messes up and says the wrong things and hides things she shouldn't (like not telling the Doctor about Danny because he is a soldier, possibly inadvertently creating "Dan the soldier"). And sometimes she can be the Doctor's "carer", parenting him if needed (the scenes in young Pink's room, "do as you are told", comforting him young or old, etc). And I love the little moments the "you are her hero" shines through, like when she says "a soldier so brave he doesn't need a gun"; the shift in focus to the Doctor's serious expression is muah, chef's kiss. I wonder how people interpret his expression. I think he doesn't like or agree with her words, but seems to be deeply considering them anyway.

2020-07-10 12:56:48 +0000 UTCThis is my favourite episode of series 8, and one of the very best in all of New Who. The tension is palpable throughout, and yet there is no actual monster or obvious threat. The thing under Ruperts blanket may well have been another kid playing a prank, and there may well have been nothing on the other side of the door of Orson Pink's spaceship - we will never know. And that's the genius of this story. The monster is in fact fear itself. Clara's advice to what we assume is the Doctor as a frightened child loops back and connects with many things. The barn the War Doctor retreated to with the Moment, the Doctor's "scared is a super power" speech from earlier, the "never be cruel, never be cowardly" lines of the three Doctors in The Day of The Doctor, and best of all "Fear makes companions of us all", which is a quote from William Hartnell's First Doctor in The Forest of Fear, the third ever episode of Doctor Who from 1963,

2020-07-10 12:15:00 +0000 UTCFor my money this is one of, if not the greatest episode of Doctor Who ever written. From the simple starting point of "what would the Doctor be scared of?" Steven Moffat ran with that and ended up delivering an incredible mediation on the nature of fear and its role in both Doctor Who and in life in general. The line "fear makes companions of us all" is an (almost) exact quote from the 1st Doctor in the very first television story. And that, in addition to the scenes that hark back to Day of the Doctor and tying that all together in the same barn with that same character, it's such a magical invocation of 'fear' throughout the entirety of Doctor Who. Because it's true, 'fear' has been an intrinsic part of Doctor Who since the very first episode, you could say that it's been a companion the entire time. That's a great piece of writing in and of itself, but to go another step and examine the idea of 'fear' not just in Doctor Who, but life in general really makes this episode. From the large-scale fears of monsters and aliens and having to choose between committing genocide on your own race or letting them destroy the universe to the mundane and ordinary but equally terrifying feelings of entering into a new relationship or being a kid scared of the dark or whats under the bed, its just such a wonderfully nuanced exploration of life and fear and humanity. And all that stuff about fear is on top of this story also being about so many other things; like how, in continuing with the other episodes this far that explore the interiority of the Doctor, this episode explores his stubborn-ness and the tunnel vision he gets sometimes with his theories and hypotheses (His insistence that there is definitely a creature that is perfect at hiding is very similar to his insistence that Robin Hood isn't real and there is no such thing as a good Dalek in the previous two episodes) leading to the great moment in Orsons base where The Doctor just has to see whats outside the door for no other reason that because "I HAVE TO KNOW". If it wasn't for the barn scene I would constantly be running around recommending this episode as one of the most incredible stort stories of all time (not that I dislike the barn scene, I think its impossibly beautiful and I love it, that scene is just too weighed down in continuity for me to feel like I can recommend it on its own). And it tackles all these complex concepts while also just being a massively entertaining, funny, scary, witty, emotional piece of television. Funnily enough, this episode came from Moffat being "selfish" as he described it. When he was writing under Russell T. Davies in series 1-4 he got to just come in and do 1 or 2 episodes a series about whatever he wanted, but when he took over he had to do all the big premieres and the even bigger finales and the christmas specials and be in charge of all the character development and the series arcs, which he absolutely loved but he somtimes just wanted to write a normal standalone episode of Doctor Who. Counting the mid-series finales and premieres for series 6 and 7 as finales and premieres, Steven Moffat hadn't written a non-premiere/finale/special episode for the show since The Beast Below in series 5! So when they were doing the planning for this series he sat down with the other producers and said "There's going to be a low budget story in the middle of the series with very few characters and no CGI and barely anything in it and I'm going to write it because it's been ages since I've been able to write a normal episode!" and so he did. Also he kind of wanted to prove to himself that he was in fact, still able write an episode that could stand on its own, independent of any arc stuff. And he obviously can, it's such a fantastic episode.

2020-07-10 07:16:03 +0000 UTCFor me this episode is really when I stopped seeing Capaldi the actor but rather the Doctor in the Tardis. He's now uniquely Twelve firing on all cylinders and I rather enjoy all the jokes and little jabs he delivers at Clara's expense. And as I said before, he only gets better.

2020-07-10 05:11:17 +0000 UTCThe reason she didn't tell the Doctor about Danny is that Danny used to be a soldier, and she knows how 12 feels about soldiers. This is one of my favourite Series 8 episodes.

2020-07-10 04:11:39 +0000 UTCFinally in my opinion, we get to the episode where they finally allow Peter to be the Doctor free of the need to show how different his 12th Doctor is from the 11th Doctor.Β Β Β It would have been a simple fix if they had just rearranged episodes . "Hide" & "Cold War" should have been #12's,Β (Hide)Β I never quite understood why they thought we the audience would think that the 11th Doctor would not see that situation as being anything but a couple who got split up while visiting the Alien version of Disney World, 12th Doctor, yeah, you could see it.Β (ColdΒ War)Β weary Vet Sea Captain "done with the bs" vs "weary Vet Time Traveler (just coming off the final day of the "Time War" and the "Siege of Trenzelore")Β done with the bs", with Clara showing actual fear and regret and the other Sciencey guy hamming it up.......we were robbed of something that could have been beyond epic (they were both fine episodes, this is not a knock, just a wish), but now think Rusty meets the 11th which in turns allows us all to gradually understand that the 12th Doctor will be a little less joyous, the 11th Doctor being jealous of Robin Hood and the "Clara Worship" does not come across as weirdly placed (in my opinion, don't get me wrong a great spoon fight is a great spoon fight) Β I just think with how they did it, they put Capaldi in handcuffs, that they have finally taken off with this episode.Β This in my opinion is when we finally get "our" 12th Doctor no more Moffat proving how different this version of the Doctor is from the previous one, now Peter just gets to be the Doctor. I think this is just one of those times where Moffat held on a little too tightly, he had the right people in place and should have maybe trusted a little bit more. Β In all transparency the 11th Doctor is my Doctor, but I love all of them and believe they have not gotten it wrong yet and Peter is finally unleashed to go.

2020-07-10 01:50:47 +0000 UTCLet me tell you about scared. Your heart is beating so hard I can feel it through your hands. Thereβs so much blood and oxygen pumping through your brain itβs like rocket fuel. Right now you could run faster and you could fight harder, you could jump higher than ever in your life. And you are so alert itβs like you can slow down time. Whatβs wrong with scared? Scared is a superpower. Itβs your superpower. There is danger in this room and guess what? Itβs you. Do you feel it? (he motions to the lump on the bed)Β Do you think he feels it?Β Do you think heβs scared?Β Nah. Loser!Β Turn your back on him. Β I told that to a Friend of mine little girl who said she was scared of her closet and it worked.
