Getting Used to a New Computer

Hey all! Last week I finally got a new computer - yay! I've been getting it set up and trying out the updated software, and the good news is that it now takes only 10-15 minutes to export Patreon-length videos 😱 compared to the hour/hour & a half it takes on my old computer. Whoohoo! I'm also hoping that this machine's graphics card will do away with that annoying glitch that seems to pop up in every export.

The bad news is that so far the file size of the exports are gigantic. Like, 20GB per video. Apple deprecated a lot of codecs on their newer computers and I have to figure out what settings will work for us here on Patreon. I'm trying to keep up the video quality while getting the files down to a manageable size.

All of this is to say, this is why you haven't seen many reactions uploaded this week. They're recorded, but they just need to be processed. I will probably have to resort to using my old computer while figuring out the new one, and any super-glitchy videos will be re-exported once I figure out the ideal settings on the new computer.

Dont'cha just love tech??

Hey Mark, with everything that was going on in Nov/Dec, I didn't get a chance to pop on here and thank you for all your help! I miss the .mov format but .mp4 gets the job done. Thanks for everything! 🙏

Hi Monica, In the export window of Premiere, choose Format - H.264 Preset - Match Source - High Bitrate Click the Video tab below, scroll down and you'll see Bitrate Settings. You can set Bitrate Encoding - VBR, 1 pass Target Bitrate - Take a look underneath, just above the Export button, you'll see an estimated File size. The file size will adjust according to what bitrate you set, but you don't want to set it too low or you'll end up with a pixelated hot mess! Having looked at a recent full reaction of yours, your old bitrate was around 6mb so you could try updating it to that figure and see what the estimated file size goes to. Anything below 5mb bitrate and you're likely to see the quality worsen, but it's a different codec so file sizes may be a bit higher now regardless. You previously exported in .mov format, but now you'll be exporting in .mp4, which is a much more widely used format. I'm not sure I know of anyone who exports in .mov except yourself, it's Apple's old format. Hope this helps, but feel free to message me if you need more help.

Thanks Mark! Yup, I got a new iMac and went from OS X 10.7.5 to 10.15.7 in the blink of an eye. LOL! I'm still using the older Mac to record the video as usual, so there should be no visual change. Another big switch, though, was going from Premiere Pro CS6 to the current Creative Cloud. A lot of the exporting presets are gone, so this is where I'm having to adapt and experiment. I appreciate the suggestions about adjusting the bitrate - I really want to keep things to the same 2-3gb results I've been getting all this time. Thanks for your help!

That’s awesome about your new comp! It’s a Mac I’m guessing? Ideally you want to export in .mp4 format using the x264 codec. If you can set bitrates, then maybe export one at 6mb bitrate and 8mb bitrate and compare them for quality and file size and see what one is worth it. A 1hour video shouldn’t be any bigger than maybe 6-8gb, but it also will vary depending on whether you got a new camera/webcam as increased quality there may also affect things.
