Oh, I didn't know that about Nefertiti, thank you for telling me! I like that this adventure could explain that bit of history. :-) I think that some of the historical characters like Nefertiti and Hitler (last series) are given 'minor' guest-starring roles, rather than an in-depth story like Vincent Van Gogh got to have in S5. I guess it just depends on the story, but I did think it was a bit random to have her here.

2020-03-26 07:12:04 +0000 UTCReally not fond of this one, it's just so incredibly unsubstantial in every single respect. The premise is let down by bizarre plotting, the idea of an ensemble across time is great but hampered by awful character writing... it's just a mess, and one where the jokes fall awkwardly flat, the drama just bumbles its way through, and the stakes are all over the joint (ie. why have a T-Rex in a dinosaur story, just to show it sleeping...do something with it already!). Interestingly, Nefertiti actually did disappear and her body has never actually been recovered, so the episode actually doesn't have to contradict what we know of history. Sadly it does in so many other ways though - it doesn't really bother to tell us much about her, she's just a token historical character thrown in for a few gender-related jokes. Not only is she objectified, her description of her husband is so ridiculously false - all evidence suggests that her and Akhenaten were intimately close, that she may even have ruled as joint-Pharaoh with him (unprecedented), and that he himself was an extremely complex indivudual. So we have an episode with dinosaurs that wastes its dinosaurs, an Egyptian queen that tells us nothing accurate about Egypt or the Queen in question, funny robots that aren't funny... it's all just a bizarre mesh of weird ideas that try and mostly fail to find a solid story. By the end, the Doctor's break in character isn't remotely earned either... the villain isn't compelling enough, the moment isn't given the attention it deserves, and we finish off with something that just cannot avoid how dire its writing is, regrettably.

2020-03-24 03:43:07 +0000 UTCAnother episode I'm not fond of at all. It's just too gimmicky, there's nothing of substance in this episode at all. The Doctor is also incredibly annoying for most of this episode. He's written to act like a complete fool for 90% of it and that's obviously to make what he does at the end that much more shocking. The problem with that approach is it only further emphasises how out of character it is for the Doctor to murder someone. This isn't good writing, it's a lazy attempt at shock value. The side characters introduced in this episode are barely characters at all. What's especially disgusting is the treatment of Queen Nefertiti, who's reduced to a damsel in distress and an object to be desired.
