your hate for Owen is so frustrating because he's my favourite character lmao. he's so much more layered than "just an asshole". he reacts out of pain and is struggling to find purpose ! that's why he's a knob to people sometimes. he's genuinely kind to people sometimes and makes very good points. he's just super honest, and truthful to people.

2020-07-14 15:07:19 +0000 UTCOh, that's an interesting idea to drain Jack of his immortality, but I'm really glad they didn't. I love the Face of Boe implication, and I feel like the immortality really makes him unique and could provide a lot of great storylines. I can't wait to find out. :-)

Having now watched it again for the first time in over a decade, I can say that apart from the final scene, the only thing that really sticks in the mind is Eve Myles' astounding performance. That primal wail she emitted when Gwen found Rhys dead was so powerful and real, I found it genuinely hard to watch, as if I was intruding on her grief. A great pity that, like all the other events of the episode, it gets reset at the end with no consequences. Of course, the ending doesn't have quite the same impact once you've seen the follow-up in Doctor Who. At the time it was first shown, the arrival of the TARDIS out of the blue was a real "punch the air" moment (and you're right that it doesn't quite match up with what we see in "Utopia", due to being made long before that episode was even written). It was also left open whether the makers had decided to use the battle with Abaddon to remove the issue of Jack's immortality (by draining him of his excess life energy, or some such). It was only when he reappeared in Doctor Who several months later that we found out that wasn't the case.
