That's right, it was way back in the beginning when Ian said "It's alive!" That's what I was thinking of!

2021-07-29 20:14:40 +0000 UTCThis story was originally written to fill a two-episode gap;and to minimise the budget by having it take place entirely within an existing set. By a convenient combination of circumstances,David Whitaker ended up creating a story that has been part of the background canon for much of the rest of the show.

2021-07-27 14:04:37 +0000 UTCP.S. I just checked and yes, the 'Fast Return' note wasn't meant to be on-camera. According to the TARDIS wiki: "The Fast Return Switch label on the TARDIS console appears to be written in felt-tip pen. Exactly why this was done is uncertain; Raymond Cusick (designer) guesses that it was written during rehearsals as a guide, while Verity Lambert surmises that it may have been written so that William Hartnell could find the switch; both agree that the label was probably never intended to be seen on-screen. Carole Ann Ford states that she and Hartnell labelled controls on the TARDIS control panel during rehearsal, and assumed the labels would be removed before production." Also, about the TARDIS's sentience, the wiki said: "This story marks the first time the Doctor indicates on-screen that his TARDIS might be sentient, though, in An Unearthly Child, Ian at one point exclaims, 'It's alive!' when he first touches its exterior. There is nothing to indicate that the Doctor himself isn't aware of the TARDIS matrix being alive, but as the series progresses, more clues are given to the viewer..."

2021-07-27 06:28:02 +0000 UTCGod, I <3 Barbara! She really just doesn't take any crap! <3 But yeah, as I said before, I really love this story. To me, it's just a nice self-contained 2-parter and a nice 'bottle' episode -- as it's set only on the TARDIS -- and so it's great for someone new to Classic Who. Because of that, I've definitely recommended it to many people over the years -- especially as it's got some interesting stuff going on between the characters, especially in more 'modern storytelling' ways. Very cerebral and I'm totally here for it! And yes, also totally reminiscent of 'Midnight'...which I also love about it. <3 So yeah, great little story and a great character piece! P.S. I could be wrong, but I believe the 'Fast Return' written note was not meant to be seen on screen, but instead to direct Hartnell to the 'right' button for the scene, but it got left on there accidentally and so now it's a funny little moment. Then again, you've got the Ninth and Tenth Doctor with little post-its stuck to his monitor, so maybe in canon, the Doctor labels stuff on the TARDIS! LOL!
