Doctor Who 12x04 "Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror" full reaction

"I was talking!"

I definitely feel this is one of the better episodes from this era. I still think the theme and delivery is a bit generic and heavy handed. The companions are still being largely underserved for me. Although I find Jodie's performance more enjoyable than in some other episodes. I think she is also being underserved more often than not.

This episode is a huge improvement from Orphan 55. A pretty decent one. The Doctor and Nikola Tesla bonding over creations and inventions is definitely the highlight of this episode. The actor who plays Tesla did a great job here. The bickering between him and Edison was quite funny but I like how they both contributed in this story. This actually made me wish Nikola could go on adventures with 13 as they had such a good rapport at the start. Likewise with Ada in Spyfall. Ryan and Graham don't get much to do here other than Graham keeping Edison in check which was entertaining enough. Would have been nice for Ryan to bond more with Tesla's assistant as they had some small interactions with each other but they didn't get much to do other than the Tesla Tower plan. I'm glad Yaz was more proactive here even though she got the basic stuff. You're right about the scorpion queen looking similar to the Racknoss Queen from The Runaway Bride especially with the face movement and scatterish mannerisms. Anjli Mohindra (Rani from SJA) did a good job as her. Although the Queen itself is a pretty generic villain. I agree regarding the abrupt end credits. The music shifted into a grander tone when Tesla said "The future is mine" with 13 and Yaz giving reassured smiles while being aware of his fate. I'm assuming this was done to provoke some sadness about the reality of Tesla not knowing his fate. And then as they walk, it abruptly ends. I think some music cues don't really quite work for specific moments like this or it's maybe more the fact that the scores aren't quite finished before the credits start rolling hence the abrupt feeling. There's even a moment when the queen appears with her army and it plays an almost horror like theme but it sounds completely offkey to me. That's probably one of the few criticisms for this episode. The chase scene with the scorpions also felt rather anit-climatic as it lacked tension and high energy. I felt like they were running at a very slow pace. But other than that, a pretty decent episode. I didn't know much about Tesla before watching this but I liked the depictions of both Tesla and Edison.
