Aww, Poor Dodo. When you talked about how little emotional fanfare was when Barbara and Ian left, I could only think of Dodo not even getting a goodbye at all, just leaving mid-story off-screen. Definitely a different style of story-telling for the companion departures back then, especially in these early years when so many come and go. Still, I kinda love this story. No, it's not the best, but I love the fun addition of Ben and Polly (and definitely wish we still more of their stories still extant), the whole Swinging 60s vibe, and the goofy computer mentally taking over people. Very early 60s SciFi and I'm totally here for it! Plus, I just always love hissing 'Doctor Who is required!' along with WOTAN (and have often joked -- probably also on here -- I sometimes think I should put that on my online dating profile. 😉) Anyway, definitely looking forward to your reaction to the 'Tenth Planet'!

The computer tries to take over the world story has been done so many times since the golden age of sci-fi and in so many diverse ways that seeing original takes on it will always seem somewhat clunky by comparison. Not helped by the obvious inability of the props to do much and the 'action' scenes to be little more than fast (for the time) cuts between smoke squirting guns. And without the original audiences view of the Post Office Tower as a brand new futuristic technolgical wonder it loses what bite it probably had on broadcast. I just find it a bit flat overall. Though Hartnell is magnificant throughout it. I love the shot of him just standing there facing the war machine down as all the soldiers run back from it.
