P.S. You'll definitely have to rewatch the Capaldi Mondasian Cybermen and regen stuff at some point after this story -- that way you can see how they tie together. :)

Yays, Cybermen! Probably my fave Doctor Who monsters. <3 I love how they basically came out of the body horror of things like artificial limbs and such, where people thought we might lose our humanity and eventually become a machine. Definitely still a bit spooky til this day!

The Cybermen are probably the one recurring antagonist that has changed design and appearance the most over the years. While Daleks have by and large remained pretty much as originally conceived, Cybermen have been reinvented time and time again. I must say, I like a lot about this early design. There is something quite chilling about their sing-song inflection, and the fact they are clearly not entirely mechanical, with human hands and the cloth covered face, makes them scarier, knowing they've been replacing bits of themselves over time. I also like the very international cast of this story, where DW is trying to envisage a future of global cooperation. And the fact they cast a person of colour as the astronaut, at a time when astronauts were very much regarded as popular heroic figures, which is I think quite progressive (not to mention his Australian co-pilot- hell, it took decades before we got anyone in space!). This would have come out just before Star Trek, with its multicultural crew, including the wonderful Nichelle Nichols as Uhura, which was ground breaking. On the topic of Star Trek, of course, the dreaded Borg were in fact inspired by the Cybermen, so again Doctor Who got there first!
