"Any man who resorts to murder as eagerly and as rapidly as you must be suspect."

One of my personal favourite stories of the Troughton Era. The twist and turns in the story keeps you guessing until the end. Classic 60s Drama at it’s very best. As I said elsewhere I remember this story when it was first broadcast.

James Gorman

There were definitely indications that there was more to Giles than meets the eye throughout the story. First off, he tips off Bruce that there had been an incident in the Australasian zone in order to force the Doctor into a corner and start impersonating Salamander at the end of the first episode. The Doctor also kept on asking Giles for proof, but he never really gave any to him. Obviously because Giles would've outed himself as well if he had done so. The Doctor even asks Giles why Salamander didn't kill him after they fell out (he was happy to kill everyone else, so this was a bit suspicious) and Giles says, "the testimony of a dead man still holds legal weight." This explains why Salamander didn't kill Giles, It could've backfired on him and exposed what the two of them had planned together. There were also the moral disagreements over whether they should kill Salamander if they had the chance. The Doctor strongly objected of course, while Giles was adamant that was the right thing to do. He even threatens the Doctor that he "won't lift a finger" to help Jamie and Victoria unless the Doctor does exactly as he says. As the Doctor points out in the last episode, "any man who resorts to murder as eagerly and as rapidly as you must be suspect." There's also weird stuff like how he's able to get passes to anywhere in the world at a moment's notice and never really explains how Salamander had discredited him. The entire story the Doctor was unsure which one of Giles or Salamander was truly the good guy, so I think it's a very clever twist that it was neither of them and both were in it together all along. The true sign of a great twist is if there are clues leading up to it and I think David Whitaker did a brilliant job in this case.
