Attack on Titan by definition is a shonen, I just think when you take eran and put him into any other landscape he would still be considered a shonen protag power struggles, character growth maybe it was wrong to compare him to goku he’s more of a naruto -moos

AoT is Seinen. Still besides my point though. What I said is he's a protagonist who isn't a typical one with the standard cookie cutter troupes we tend to see a lot. He's a unique Seinin protagonist and I appreciate Isayama's writing. That about sums it up.

I would definitely consider attack on Titan Shonen not only does it fit into the standard definition of shonen ( “shonen” means “young person’s comic”) its also at its base a power struggle by the many protagonist big or small vs the antagonist weather it be a person in Kenny, Zeke, the world, ect all be it’s not the standard way that most would see it. I think the term shonen has just been tied with battle anime for so long that it’s easy to forget that’s not what shonen means. It’s also easy to make an anime “what you want it” in your mind because you want it to be something more because of how everyone sees things individually. And going with what @haxxy was saying Eran is kinda like a standard shonen protagonist he fights gains power gets stronger multiple times the only difference in the landscape is more grim them most. Like Dr.stone major different in landscape but still shonen. Eran fights to get stronger in the first season then goes against his first real enemy after a power up to fight Annie. I’m DBZ goku fights to get stronger comes up against his first major enact after training Vegeta both Annie and vegeta to there core are fighting for the same thing.

"With effort and willpower we can overcome our baser instincts". That sounds like a pretty standard shonen trope imo. But if that's not what you meant or I misinterpreted it, then that's my bad. I'm sorry about that.

That's not what I was getting at. I think we are saying the exact thing in different ways. Humans are animals that cover our instincts with a thin veneer of civility. War and hatred often strips us bare of that. That's what I was getting at. Nothing about shonen troupes...just the human condition.

Not quite my point... but ok. I don't think that's what Isayama is saying at all. This isn't some Shonen protagonist who changes the world by determination and all those other nauseating tropes. This whole series has literally been about which side can kill the other quicker to survive. Season 1 it was titans. Season 2 it was the shifters and the beginning of fighting humans. Season 3 it was humans, titans, humanity, the past. Every season the conflict grows larger and larger all while each side are trying the damnedest to kill the other to survive. There is no suppression of baser instincts, it's the literal opposite as they try to tap into those to survive.

Welcome to the other side. Grisha is a really cool character deserves more love. Young Grisha reminds me of Eren... super pissed off at the unfairness of the world hes born into and dont give a faq who knows it. Ashe figured out the owl so fast O.o good job very perceptive. This epi and the next have really good dubs just sayin just sayin dont flame my post ><

its a big epi if they got 50% of whats goin on the first time around thats pretty good. I member after Grisha' father was talking about the Ymir Fritz origin part, I was mentally stuck on a runaway thought train for the rest of the epi. When it was over and I member immediately restarting the epi thinking, wait wtf just happend?

Yeah, I don't think Isayama is saying that it's right or wrong...just that's who we are. That with effort and willpower we can overcome our baser instincts but they will always be there just below the surface.

Yeah that's true. Many people have pointed out and applauded Isayama's very subtle but profound 4th wall monologue. I don't disagree. But I think something just as important gets often overlooked. The conversation he has with Grisha when he asked if he felt no remorse almost gives me "Pains Cycle of Hatred" vibes. He defends his own actions by pointing out its no different than what the Restoration would've done to him and his family or country had they succeeded. Driving home a really important theme. There are no right or wrongs in AoT, only perspective.

I think pretty much every reaction I have seen to this episode glosses over what Sgt. Major Gross says. He is talking to the audience during his monologue, telling us how humans are fascinated with cruelty. Immediately after everyone usually cheers for his brutal death proving his point. Isayama was very particular about this camera angle as he wanted it to be breaking the 4th wall.

Their reactions to who the smiling titan was is by far my favorite from any other reaction I've seen 😆.
On a more serious note: AoT never ceases to amaze me with how dark and fucked the writing can be. Just when you think the story couldn't really surprise you with some crazy shit anymore, Isayama, is like "this isn't even my final form".
