I've always seen Johan as someone who lacks a sense of self. He has no name, and was even dressed as his sister as a child. The only thing keeping him grounded is his connection to and love for Anna/Nina. Also, all the things he does as an adult sort of mirror the things he does as a child or the things he was taught. He hasn't grown past that stage of childhood and his lack of self/identity has twisted into a desire to "cease existing", because to him its not like he really ever did. We can assume that they've already been going to the readings since Johan already has the Nameless Monster book so he had been getting brainwashed even before Anna was taken to the Red Rose Mansion. She returns and tells him everything and he, being already a little messed up, takes that story on for himself. Funny enough, Anna represses those memories while Johan carries in with him. Also, it could be that the experiments he experienced at 511 had an effect as well. We know that whatever they were doing there made kids start to forget things about themselves and they told friends things about themselves so they would be remembered. Sort of mirrors the twins, no?
