So he started the process to subjugate Makora (Mahoraga for English translation) as basically a suicide pact since he was about to be killed. This was the same ritual he was starting in season 1 when faced against Sakuna but stopped to trust Itadori. The ten shadows technique (TS for short) grants the ability to summon up to 10 specific shikigami endlessly with various abilities. Youβve seen the two demon dogs, the toads, the elephant and the rabbits and now Makora. The dogs were a given with the technique. The others had been subjugated off screen. Another ability of TS is that as the shikigami are defeated, the remaining shikigami grow stronger. The other part of the subjugation ritual is that the TS user (megumi in this era) can have other people participate in the ritual. This is basically what happened with mr ponytail. As megumi and sakuna were explaining, if even a participant dies, the subjugation will have failed and megumi was going to die as well. The entire reason megumi cast it in the first place was because was already about die. He had spent a lot of his energy using is domain expansion and multiple summons in rapid succession and taking damage against Toji. After getting sliced open in the previous episode, he was basically about to either bleed out or be killed, so if he was gonna die, he might as well go out swinging.
