The animal is from the Momotaro folklore/story in which Momotaro meets a Dog, Pheasant and a Monkey on his travels. Sakazuki's nickname is Akainu which means Red Dog Kuzan's nickname is Aokiji which means Blue Pheasant Borsalino's nickname is Kizaru which means Yellow Monkey Which funnily enough are also the 3 primary colours, Red, Blue and Yellow
