One thing to keep in mind is that we don't actually know whether Shanks and his crew fought Kaido. All it really said was that they had a run it because Kaido wanted to go after Whitebeard and shanks stopped that. Could be through a fight of course, but its never explicitly stated that it was a fight.

2024-06-22 00:12:21 +0000 UTCRegarding the scar Blackbeard gave Shanks, it was probably sometime after Gol D Roger execution and before Luffy's backstory in episode 3 since Shanks had the scar then. So more than 10 years ago from current time. That is definitely before Ace joined Whitebeard crew so Blackbeard did not have devil fruit powers then. However, Shanks was probably not the big shot he is right now.

It was because Kaido was planning to attack Whitebeard to catch them off guard as they are preparing to start a war with the navy. Shanks protected Whitebeard and stopped that from happening.
