Lupe first look

far from final but i wanted to share

Lupe first look

Comments

I just watched the video on Nebula and it’s truly incredible; I think it’s one of your best. For anyone here, I’ve never listened to Lupe in my life. I’m traveling abroad, so I just used WiFi to download the “good” Lupe albums. The big question is, should I start at the beginning (Food and Liquor 1?), or go straight to Tetsuo & Youth?

I really appreciate the opening third of this preview being about the para social relationship with Lupe. I have my own, very watered down version of that. I'm not from Chicago, but from Rockford. My best friend's dad is friends with Lupe and has connections to the Black Muslim non profit spaces in Chicago. I also wrote a 30 some page paper on Lupe as a freshman in college and got to give it to him when I saw him in concert in Berkeley. Growing up as just, a Muslim (admittedly an upper middle class, non Black Muslim) in the Bush and Obama years, he was my role model and shaped so much of my politics to this day. I remember Little Weapon being the first song of his I ever heard. I remember release night for Tetsuo & Youth and hearing Mural for the first time. I remember crying at 2 am listening to Alan Forever off Drogas Wave on release night. All of this is to say that, I know as a big fan, it's gonna be tough to go back through a lot of the frustrating moments of Lupe's career and the way he is perceived by hip hop at large. But, this video starting out on this really personal, genuinely touching and note feels welcoming. Like, this is a space for Lupe fans. And I've wanted that for so long because places like Reddit and friend groups and hip hop media don't give flowers to this man who has meant so much to me since I was like, 9 years old.
