Lost hip hop commentary video
Added 2025-07-27 16:35:46 +0000 UTCI was supposed to release this video this past weekend but I ended up having conversation with The Company Man that made me not want to put this out fully (i'll still use some parts of it probably) cause i have more thoughts now. But i figured it'd be dope to let yall see it anyway.

“Content vs. Art” is the perfect way to describe our current conundrum.

2025-11-24 21:52:11 +0000 UTCNot sure if this is a hot take but I think hip hop turning 50 is the beginning of the end. The next generation of young kids will eventually accidentally discover a new genre and rap/hip hop will become more niche

2025-07-29 13:38:49 +0000 UTCListen—people be askin' me all the time "Yo Mos, what's gettin' ready to happen with hip-hop?" (Where do you think hip-hop is goin'?) I tell em, "You know what's gonna happen with hip-hop? Whatever's happening with us" If we smoked out, hip-hop is gonna be smoked out If we doin' alright, hip-hop is gonna be doin' alright People talk about hip-hop like it's some giant livin' in the hillside Comin' down to visit the townspeople We are hip-hop Me, you, everybody, we are hip-hop So hip-hop is going where we going So the next time you ask yourself where hip-hop is going Ask yourself: where am I going? How am I doing? You’re doing the work, having the convo, Justin, The Professor, Curtis King, Scru, DJ Hed & Gina, Toure and Green many others. I’m going to lend my voice more and speak up more. I started a podcast with a friend of mine to focus on the 5 pillars. I wanted to interview the Ray Vaughns, Coast Contras & reach back to the Walés, KRITs, Ransoms. It is called The Say No More Podcast and my boy lost that creative drive and spirit. I tried to keep it up myself but it hurt to see my friend fall out of love with Hip-Hop. It’s hard even as big as Joe and Charlemagne are to compete with the streamers. It’s a disgrace for yall not be on that list but it is Complex, let’s not forget. Money has been at the forefront which is why we don’t have many MC/Rappers that you see with no jewelry. Look at Jim Jones look vs the Clipse, ten chains on the neck vs one solid piece. All the younger ones have all this jewelry on and we saw no rise, no story to how you got that, you came in the game iced. No hunger like DMX with a dog collar chain, even the name Dark Man X. There’s rappers with names like dghjk.$$$ and they have nothing to say that you want to hear or listen to. I don’t want to know what Hip-Hop will look like in another 50. I was born in ‘83 and I memorized Beat Street as a kid. I’m okay with who we hold dear, look forward to convos with people like yall and I’m okay with watching the party die. All good things come to an end, from one ol’ head with loccs to another 🫡💯 Thank you for all you do. ✌🏾

2025-07-28 15:36:24 +0000 UTCI directly related to that first song on Clipse’ new album. I literally had to replay that due to losing my father last year. That stuff(trust me) sticks with you and the world is never the same. But this new album is a banger, plus I’m also feeling a good throwback concept is Raekwon’s new album.

2025-07-28 13:26:19 +0000 UTCI think the concept of albums have been dying out, Now it’s a collection of songs that they hope a couple songs might break out on the chart and can be a single. Newer artists aren’t making singular albums, just singles, so they won’t put that much thought and effort into crafting a coherent album.

2025-07-27 20:06:39 +0000 UTCThis might be an insanely long comment, so feel free to disregard. I'll say up top that I'm a ride-or-die for Meg and as such have fallen in love w Glorilla, I was a big fan of Latto's debut project (but not really her later work, we'll get to that), and I had a deep love for but yet more mixed feelings about Doechi's project last summer. On the other hand, my first love in music is really Pink Floyd (can't tell you how happy it made me to hear you connect the yachty album to dsotm bc yeah, that's a big reason I love that yachty album too). I love the new clipse and tyler albums both, i have love for j cole, kendrick, yadayada. I think a fundamental problem w the non-clickbait hiphop media (I'm thinking you FD, ebro, radio shows, interviews, vibevilla/shawncee type reactors etc) is that I don't think the music that the women make is... really... for you guys. Not to say you can't enjoy it, or you can't understand the artistry of it, BUT to say that the main reason people like to spend time digging into, appreciating, and ultimately coming up w useful and uplifting critiques of an album or an artist is bc there is something deep in the music that makes you want to keep playing an album front to back, looking for and dissecting what's giving you that feeling. if its not for you.. you dont get the feeling.. you dont do that.. your critiques arent that helpful. W the men in hiphop, I see people unpacking themes and bars and layers that reveal over the course of multiple listens, but I don't think I've ever seen someone in rap media sit w a project from Meg or Glo like that, the response, if there is one, mainly being like "yeah thats cool im sure itll be a big hit" and then they move on, assuming that the surface is kinda all there is to it at best, at worst -- well, that can get pretty ugly too I also want to caveat a bit and say that, as albums, i think its cool/ok to have stuff that doesn't work -- arguably theres a song on the clipse album that doesnt quite work, and in listening to music across genres my impression is that having an album that is completely artistically coherent is very hard (esp when theres pressure to produce pop hits) and the concept album is a next tier of difficulty on top of that w that said, I can go thru meg albums, and glo albums, and unpack and give lots of love where I feel it's due and critique where I think it could be better. i can do that bc ive listened to those albums obsessively, w there being meg albums that have literally altered the course of my life. however, I get really disappointed in the rap media i follow when they all only mention the ladies in passing, give softball interview questions, or prefer to focus on the drama around their persona, bc the drama is what generates clicks -- admittedly, thats what the hiphop media audience is looking for in re the women bc often the hiphop media audience isnt really there for the art these women make either, but it should be the critics job to help educate and uplift the audience to these artists, not just pander to the audience's desires. what's funny is i have exactly the same critique of meg that you do -- i would love to see her make a really solid concept album, or even just a more artistically elevated album than what she's put out so far. i know she had the ability to do so, and altho i'll love whatever she gives, i would really especially like to see that however, i don't think thats something meg, glo, or latto are being supported in the way they could be by the hiphop media landscape, even when that landscape in general is not actively tearing them down (which... yikes). when meg put out good news, she talked in the press abt it being something she was really proud of bc she got to sit and think abt it, but in scouring for reviews/media abt it, most of it was not very in depth, and the stuff that was more detailed was pretty harsh. glo has talked abt loving criticism, but i dont see critics celebrating what she's giving and then offering criticism that would push her forward on an artistic level. when latto did press for her new album she talked abt wanting it to be interpreted as a BODY of work, and mainly got headnods abt yeah thats what you're supposed to say, but i didnt hear many ppl dissecting like okay this works and this doesnt. doechi got ONE INTERVIEW that went thru the album on an artistic level, and it wasnt an interview w someone in hiphop media. obv it could be im missing stuff but thats how it seems to me. In conclusion, i think the demographics of the reviewers here matter a lot. Meg speaks to me in a way that clipse, as much as i can recognize what they're saying, just doesn't. but i think in hip hop media, as w many disciplines, entry into the field is gate kept by ppl in the field or even the ppl most used to engaging w the field, and those ppl judge based off of their knowledge and tastes, which are calibrated to a certain (male) sound. on the other hand, meg got famous bc she blew up on socials, kinda blowing past the gatekeepers. im saying that the media landscape has not evolved to be able to keep up w, show the right amts of love to, and properly support the women artists to really grow through their career, even though that seems to be something the artists themselves keep trying to ask for. idk what these artists lives are like behind the scenes, but, for example, ive heard that lady gaga felt pretty iced out by other women in pop, eventually making friends only elton john. it seems like latto, glo, meg, flomilli, and others are able to have fun together, but latto has talked abt having deeply uncomfortable interactions w men in hiphop, basically asking her for sexual favors for a verse, and it really making her afraid of working w men. meg had the incident w TL and the fallout from that which split ppl in hiphop, glo seems like she could and would take someone out.. but the point is that it's extremely possible that, altho idk for sure, this group of artists really isnt getting artistic help/support from anyone but each other, adding to the lack of development. i could go on and talk abt how this really mirrors and tracks my own experience as a gender minority in math research. but maybe thats me projecting and this is long enough.

2025-07-27 18:34:55 +0000 UTCDoechii is currently doing that process of making an album rn. Edit: I do think you need to listen to THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE DOLLAR MENU by Ray Vaughn.

2025-07-27 17:44:00 +0000 UTCAs a 52 year old, I love the Clipse' new album. I don't recall a 'comeback album' in any genre that rivals what they originally popped off with. Not to mention show age and growth, and yet appeal to a significant number of under 30s. It's interesting that you mentioned Malice being the highlight of the project - as much as I love Push, his writing is astonishing on it. I have watched every reaction video I can find, down to one's with only a few subscribers 😅 and what's fascinating is watching his lyrics specifically, hit youngin's like a MTBTTF. 😅 It makes me hope that other young Pharrells and lyricists see a future where they can fuse the current 'vibe' theme of younger artists yet hold fast to having a good pen. I see Ray Vaughn in this camp potentially, but again, he's over 30. (so is Travis Scott at 34, but I don't consider him hh. 😒) Great video

2025-07-27 17:39:14 +0000 UTCOne more thought, Lil Simz is young and up-coming, even though her follow-up was not as catchy as her debut album. As a femme who wants music more than T and A, I am so GREATFUL for Lil Simz and the bridge she makes to our Nigerian roots.

2025-07-27 16:58:53 +0000 UTCI do believe the people making music right now would tell you they can’t spend two years cooking. And the world is making content and thats a 24/7 grind. I also believe the people who are grinding away in the dark for years on their art will eventually make a big splash with something fresh, then burn out. I had the inverse feeling about Tylers latest album versus the last. Don’t tap the glass (after a single listen to the full album) feels like the lesser-than left overs, as if Chromakopia was the “one for me” and DTTG is the “one for them”.
