And, to answer more questions, India has an Army, a Navy and an Air Force. We also have a Coast Guard. We don't have a Marine Corps, although there are Naval units trained in land-based warfare. Since we don't have a tradition of sending large land-fighting forces on board ships to distant shores to fight, we never needed a Marine Corps. We do have a bunch of Paramilitary Forces that assist the Military in Military roles. The Assam Rifles - led by Army officers, and is tasked with Regional Internal Security and with guarding the India-Myanmar border. Special Frontier Force - tasked with Covert Ops along the Indo-Chinese border. Five erstwhile Paramilitary Forces are now classified as Central Armed Police Forces: 1. Central Reserve Police Force The world's largest paramilitary force, somewhat similar in function to the US National Guard, but is a permanent force. States can call in the CRPF if their state police can't handle a situation. 2. Border Security Force Obvious, but this one focuses on the India-Pakistan borders in areas not under Army deployment. 3. Indo-Tibetan Border Police Patrols the Indo-Tibet border, ever since the Indo-China war. 4. Central Industrial Security Force Provide security for all government buildings, government-owned and sensitive industries like Oil and Ports, and also handle ALL airport security (Our TSA are Uniformed Central Government Soldiers) 5. Sashastra Seema Bal (Central Armed Border Force) Originally armed support unit for India's Foreign Intelligence Service (RAW), the SSB is now also tasked with Border Security on the Nepal border and the Bhutan border. Finally there are two special services. the National Security Guard is India's elite counterterrorism special forces unit. Think FBI's HRT. This was the unit that resolved the Attack on the Taj with zero additional casualties. Special Security Group An elite Commando Personal Protection unit, providing proximate security to National leaders. Very similar to the US Secret Service, without the Treasury function.

Just like any army in the world, Indian military forces are similar branches with their own insignia, own songs for parade's, own slogans and in some case own specialities. There is a NatGeo documentary showcasing selection and preparation of special forces but it is an hour long. You can watch and review.
