Just to provide some context: India conducted its first nuclear test on 18 May 1974 under the leadership of our first female Prime Minister Ms. Indira Gandhi. The operation was code-named "Smiling Buddha" or "Pokhran-I". This particular movie is about our second nuclear test called Pokhran - II, that happened between 11–13 May 1998 at an army base in Rajasthan. It was spearheaded by the beloved Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, under the leadership of our then Prime Minister Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is also respected across different party lines. At that time, India was only the sixth country to join the nuclear club. Now perhaps there are 8 nations, if I am not mistaken -- at least publicly known. The then US govt (Clinton administration) put massive economic sanctions on India and tried to negotiate with us so we sign the "Comprehensive Nuclear-Test–Ban Treaty (CTBT)" but India refused to bow down and said it wasn't consistent with India's national security interests. In fact, 11 May was officially declared as National Technology Day in India to commemorate the first of the five nuclear tests that were carried out on 11 May 1998 and the day is celebrated by recognizing and awarding individuals and industries in the field of science and technology.
