In India there is a lot of pressure on kids to achieve academic excellence. Parents see their ego in their children's grades. This is becuase education was the only way to get a job and move up in life for a long time. Especially in families without a lot of wealth, they want their children to succeed in life and be better at it than the parents were and education is treated like a certain insurance policy to achieve that. However, things are changing and you can find parents who let their children be, encouraging them to pursue their natural talents. But this is not yet wide spread.
