Saffron is expensive in India too. Also in India, it’s very easy to get duped into buying “fake” saffron... 😒 My mother actually got a small box as a gift from someone and as soon as she used it for the first time she knew it was “imitation saffron”.
Honestly, I buy saffron from Indian stores in Chicago and take it for my family (mom, aunts, etc) in India... costs around $10 for 2 Gm.... but it’s guaranteed high quality Spanish saffron.
Many times saffron is on sale at Indian stores in USA during festivals like Diwali etc so maybe plan to buy a box or two (for ur annual supply) then!
Do not get saffron at Costco or other non-Indian stores... it’s much more expensive as the demand in those stores is not as much as in Indian stores.
Btw, another street food I highly recommend in Mumbai: “Misal pav” ... it’s amazing! My fav !
Finally, “paan” icecream/kulfi is definitely loved by many! 🙂
