this version of Dev das was definitely closer to the original story in bengali. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali version was very very over the top and did not convey the state of mind of the characters or their environment. It was just grand and overly expensive sets. This Bimal Roy version is the best one in hindi at least. And yes Dev Das is a depressing story of a spoilt brat alcoholic but it has been part of the Indian DNA for a long time. The story has been made in literally all the languages at some point or the other
