'bollywood' is popular all over Asia and by that I mean all over the middle east, and central Asia including Russia (and neighboring countries in eastern Europe), even China and Japan. Indian films are really really popular in Africa too. It is much much more than a billion people who love these stars and their work. Another aspect is that its not just SRK that gets this kind of adulation. It is also BIg B. For the past 50 years people line up outside his home for a sight of him. Literally every young man coming into the various Mumbai railway stations comes with a singular dream to be become like Amitabh Bacchan the original and the only Angry Young Man. Even more, consider the popularity of Ranjnikant and the adulation that he gets. There are a whole bunch of other people and I dont think there is any comparison to that worship like mentality here in the US.

2021-12-14 21:44:15 +0000 UTCIf you have to compare the stardom of SRK or any other Indian megastar to movie stars in US, you're gonna come up short because movie culture and parasocial connections with actors work differently in the two countries. A closer comparison may be the mania that pop-stars like Elvis, Michael Jackson, Beatles or currently BTS, generate. In terms of on-screen appeal of SRK, personally, an equivalent comparison would be someone like Cary Grant from classic Hollywood. Women wanted to be with him and men wanted to be him - the ultimate leading man throughout his career. Very different in terms of looks, but similar in terms of charisma and wits, and able to make people fall in love with them through the screen. At least, that's how it was for me!
