I actually love the indulgent affection you bring into the review. You are right a lot of the humour is linguistic and culture specific. And Utpal Dutta was a doyen of theatre. He is the same generation as my parents and their generation swears by the mesmeric quality he brought to the stage. He did Bengali theatre as well as Shakespeare and Brecht at a time when theatre in Calcutta was going through its Epic period.

I really like Padosan but Golmaal definitely has better and more clever humour in it. Unfortunately with most movies that are heavy on dialogues most of this gets lost in translation. The last 20 mins are more in your face slapstick comedy and I guess therefore translate better. It is definitely one of my all time favourites and I think it is like Chashme Baddoor, Chupke Chupke and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron - movies that appeal to all generations as its very well loved even today by the younger gen.
