Meena Kumari was magical in Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam …. That movie was way ahead of its time

2022-01-28 03:32:23 +0000 UTCVery glad you have found Meena Kumari. Apart from Sahib, Biwi aur Ghulam, everything she is in, are great watches, just to watch her and her craft. However, this story is not unique in its progressiveness. You should watch Meena Kumari in Chitralekha from 1964 where she plays a courtesan too but set in a much earlier era (in 300 BCE). In India, the courtesan and the devadasi tradition has a very long history and the daughters of these women became courtesans as well. This community of people were highly educated and artists but as is common in any society, many appreciated them but most others looked down upon them, The idea and concept of a courtesan (devadasi in Hindu parlance and Tawaif in the Islamic one) has been depicted in books from time immemorial and in films, much earlier than the 1950s too. Another really beautiful film on a similar theme is Umrao Jaan with Rekha, made in the 1980s. (I do not, I repeat, do not recommend the later version with Aishwarya Rai, please! At least not over the original with Rekha.)
