I have seen Gangubai. I liked it as a one time watch. This film is all about certain form and director's vision. I share many of your critical observation but for me the form kept the film together and made it enjoyable despite flaws. And I enjoyed Alia's performance from the beginning till the end, she fit the SLB's form. It was a pleasure to watch her.
Your expectations were just too high, guys. And you wanted it so much to be a different film with a different story. The realism that Rick expected wouldn't have fit the SLB's form.
But I'm always glad to hear your honest opinion.

Padmavaat and Bajirao Mastani…..most in my circles rank these two films as SLB’s weakest. Visually stunning and great performances, but weak films overall , particularly in creative license given to historical characters and making them something they weren’t. In contrast, Gangubai feels like a return to the old SLB style, a combination of Khamoshi meets Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, two of his finest works. So Gangu is a welcome change for me personally. Really, I’d rank it VERY high on the list of SLB films. I’ve also read a lot about Gangubai over the years, being a huge fan of Hussain Zaidi’s books and I really feel Alia was perfect caSting. She was a polished girl who was dragged out Of that life and into the red light district. She WAS a misfit - that’s what made her stand out. I thought Alia knocked it out of the park.
Different opinions! :)
