Ha ha, certainly not that expectation since it was (coming out!) my first AK's film (others waiting on the list, maybe one day in a right mood). Maybe just my Bollywood film mode with inclination to watch older films or my age/experience.
Sometimes I like much worse films because some element touches me. Here the film (mainly male characters) didn't convince me to care.

Fair enough. I do feel arranged marriage would save some people a lot of time, of course if the couple decides that respectively. Not forced. Like some of my friends told their parents to find them a match since they were busy. So that’s more like love cum arranged. Which is like your friends setting you up 😄

Thanks for sharing your view. Ya I really enjoyed it and maybe you were expecting a typical AK film? And that’s one thing I liked is how different this was and how it wasn’t his “typical” film shows his range as a director. But totally understand that you didn’t like it and that’s fine everyone is allowed to have a different opinion of FIlm

I'm really glad you watched Manmarziyaan. First, it was highly requested here. Second, I really wanted to hear/read why it is so much liked.
And now, Korbin, I have the same feeling like after your review of Highway:-) I understand everything you say but I just don't feel that way about this film.
I liked cinematography, music, Tapsee, Abhishek's image and some social picture (interesting for a foreigner). But somehow I didn't connect with the story and characters (particularly guys') emotionally. The film was for me tiresome in some parts and the ending seemed too sugarcoated in comparison to the film's overall tone.
But I like to know different perspectives. Nice review. Maybe I could like the film more if I rewached it.
I watched Manmarziyaan directly after watching SLB's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (partly similar concept, not particularly recommended), maybe that had some effect on me.

Husband Material was the English title for this film… this was screened in Toronto under that name.

Well, failure of a marriage is not a flaw but in love marriage, you choose for yourself, you make your own life decision, so no regrets later on. versus arrange marriage a lot of people involved, so if it fails or leads to unhappy marriage, there is regret because you know exactly which people to blame :) not an argument, just a different perspective.... peace out !! But I agree with you, there is no perfect way :) life is unpredictable either way!

I think there are flaws in both the marriages, love or arrange. I have seen so many couples who had love marriages splitting within years of being together. And same goes for arrange. So I guess there’s no one right way :)

I live in Canada. And the number of “speed dating” events that I see here, it’s a very similar concept. Just getting someone to find potential matches for you so you can see if you guys click or not also saves you time and effort. Asking your parents to find someone for you is no different than using a dating app/ speed dating events. The idea of arranged marriage was extremely difference decades ago. Like you said, it has evolved a lot. And helps people who don’t have time to find someone for themselves. Asking a friend if they have a potential match for me is really no different than asking my parents if they know someone who could be a good match for me. Just adding my 2 cents here :)

So excited you guys saw the movie!!! All three are very unique characters, really and all well done. I like that although Taapsee and Vicky really love each other, Vicky's character also has the self awareness to know that deep down, he does not want to get married to anyone yet and just can't do it. Doesn't mean he doesn't love her. I think the back and forth is very realistically captured as a lot of couples go thru this decision process especially when parents push you to get married by a certain age.

Manmarziyaan means doing whatever your heart says! Also, not a fan of arranged marriage but it has surely evolved - now there is a longer courtship period so that the guy and the girl can know each other better before moving forward! .... still has too many flaws though!

Great to have Stephanie for a movie review and so glad it's this one. Romance has been my least favourite genre as most romance films from Hollywood really lack in the writing, character development and just overall filmmaking, as well as being really cheesy (not the Bollywood kind of romance cheesy, of course), until I discovered Japanese cinema and fell in love with the genre. I didn't think Hollywood or films from India could match the level of filmmaking of Japanese cinema in the romance genre, until Anurag Kashyap decided to have a go at it and has gone and made possibly the best goddamn romance film I've ever seen. Even though I prefer more darker and grittier films like Ugly and Raman Raghav, gotta give credit where it's due, this is such a 10/10 film for me. The way Amit Trivedi's music is used through the scenes is perfection. Yes, the writer is Kanika Dhillon and she's great. Next Anurag Kashyap film I'd say should be Mukkabaaz (The Brawler).
