I grew up in Darjeeling, which is in West Bengal but much closer to Sikkim, Assam & Nepal than it is to Kolkata. The area borders Nepal, China and Bhutan. I look more like a mainlander but growing up there, I was a minority. Even the school I went to, most of the students were either Nepali Indians or Mizo, but I never felt out of place. A diverse environment was what I grew up in and that was the norm for me. The first time I experienced racism and felt that I was different was when I moved to the UK in 2003 and was the only non-white kid in my entire school lol I visited New Delhi in March this year and saw way more North East Indians than I thought I would. Group of friends that were mixed with Mainlanders and North Easterns. So so many north east and mainland couples. It was beautiful. I'm sure discrimination still exists but I think it's rapidly dying out with the younger generation.
