Alia Bhatt's mother Soni Razdan did a movie that touched on a similar topic, directed by her father Mahesh Bhatt. A movie that's emotional like 'Life is Beautiful' but which runs like a slow-paced thriller. One of the best movies of all time in Hindi cinema - Saaransh (The Gist). It was the official entry for the Oscars that year. Won the National Award for best lyrics, and got Anupam Kher the best actor Filmfare award for his first film. Soni was nominated too. Bhatt received a special prize at the 14th Moscow International Film Festival.

Quite successful story of daughter, mother and grandmother, in which the daughter was threatened by her love interest. The story was not about domestic violence, the context was very specific for Polish 1950s, time of the peak of totalitarian terror. The film was officially submitted for the Oscars. The first part, though a good realistic picture of domestic abuse, was for me dragging a bit and disconected me from the film in some moments. Great performances from the leads. I liked all supporting characters and actors' performances. I didn't need the film to be darker. Generally respect for artistic choices of taking up that serious topic in that kind of story telling, with characters who aren't just black or white. Great soundtrack, including songs from Om Shanti Om;-) For Shefali Shah watch Once Again. Beautiful mature love story. You liked the trailer.
