This is an important story to tell but it does not have to be blown into this trend of ultra slow motion action and exaggerated moves. The history is a very complicated one - the story of this film. The climate in Kerala has always been hot and humid and it was regular for men and women to go topless. Women's breasts were not sexualized at all. There are a lot of documents where Chinese and early Portuguese visitors to the Travancore and the Zamorin royal courts were shocked to see women, even queens were bare chested. COme 19th century and the influence of the Christian British, the people of Kerala were conditioned to believe that their old ways are wrong and that women (not the men, mind you) need to cover up. The last queen of Travancore thought highly of Queen Victoria and her prudish ways. Some time before this, upper caste women thought it best to cover up but that was not allowed to the women of lower castes. They were forced to uncover their upper bodies in the presence of upper caste men. In fact, they were forced to pay a 'Breast Tax" Nangeli, was one one of those brave women who stood against the tax. This story should be about her but it looks like this film is glorifying the fighting men again. Its ironical that women today are trying very hard to not be only objectified and sexualized when in 19th century India, some women had to take up arms and protests, only to cover up. They did not realize that they were already liberated by not covering up. The era is defined as Victorian and being the epitome of prudishness where showing the leg of a table was sexualized and covered with over sized table cloths in the West and that was the time the British were discovering Khajuraho and the Kamasutra and the famously bare chested women of Kerala.
