Anupam Kher can do over the top acting, yes, like in DDLJ (the film demanded that kind of acting) but he can also do a balanced portrayal of a character. In 1984, a then 29-year-old Kher played a retired old man who loses his son in Saaransh. He won the Filmfare Best Actor award, which, as you can imagine, is rarely reserved for a 'non-hero' character. Saaransh remains one of my favourite Hindi films of all time - it's got heart and soul. Stars Alia Bhatt's mum, and was directed by her father.

You really really need to watch Anupam Kher's 1984 film Saaransh, The Accidental Prime Minister and he's also good in Bend It Like Beckham, Aiyyary, Special 26 and I'm sure there are others where you will not see any over the top acting from Kher.
