I think the reason this movie stood out at the time was that in mainstream bollywood, the lead characters were always shown as saints with maybe a little light hearted mischief. It was unheard of for the main lead, especially a popular actor or actress to be depicted as toxic. You will see more complex and flawed lead characters in old south indian movies but for bollywood it was quite rare. Interesting fact of the movie: Jaya Bachan actually modeled herself after Lataji to play the character of a very succesful but humble singer. She went to Lataji's recordings to study her mannerisms and emulated her attire. Movie has nothing do with Lataji's actual life though.

Jaya performed great and Big B was just ok in a one dimensional character. Silsilia is another movie that is very underwhelming. People keep mentioning it and trust me it will be a disappointment just like this. Other than a few songs and scenes, there is nothing special in that film also. For good Big B films, I suggest you watch Agneepath, Paa, and Khuda Gawah next.
