I like it that for most films that about 2 hours, the first hour is all building up the world around the characters. Others might find it boring, but I love it. The reason for the love interest for Vinod is not just to make Vinod more human but also, in my opinion, to trigger his human side when he sees his neice on TV. By that time he has changed (even a little)and realized like you said, that he cannot ever live that down. The one place that I misunderstood is that I thought it was Pramod who went searching for his wife and daughter in Mumbai. Did not realize until much later in the film that it is Vinod that went to meet them both.
