I have become deeply interested in the original story and intend to read the books. But guys lets be real, even the Tamilians did not whole heartedly liked the movies else there is no reason for PS2 to do less well than PS1 in TN. Perhaps the books deserve another go. A trilogy at least in the next 5-10 years. Don't like the idea of a TV series since that would look like a bargain basement product due to budget constraints.

As a non-Tamil north Indian, the movies disappointed me due to lack of intensity, geographical mumbo-jumbo and unfamiliarity with names. Mani Ratnam chose to eschew the familiar and simple device of showing a map when characters were moving from one place to other. The biggest grouse though are the action scenes. Never knew that Mani would be so uncomfortable or uninterested in choreographing them well. The elephant rescue scene in PS1 (in water near shore) is the most amateurish i have seen by any known name director in Indian cinema. The characterisation of 'Nambi' made no sense. Who is he? why is he everywhere? Why is his acting so over the top even in 5 second screen time? Only characters played by Aishwarya, Vikram and Trisha left an impact. Jayaram and Karthi were a wash and rest were inconsequential.
